Description
What is Furoshiki?
Furoshiki is a piece of square towel that people from Japan have been using to wrap gifts and carry groceries for generations. Due to its unique pattern, size and weaving style, this 100% high quality cotton towel can be used in a variety of different ways.
About the pattern
The pattern of the cherry blossom (sakura) is richly symbolic, and used throughout Japan in various sectors of art. Every spring, when the cherry trees beautifully bloom in Japan, the blossoms will fall soon after in huge numbers creating flying clouds. Due to their volatility and beauty they symbolize mortality and remind of the ephemeral nature of life, which is deeply rooted in Buddhist believes. As such, they stand for gratitude, appreciation and acceptance of destiny.
About the designer
The Isa Monyo collection was originally designed by Kunio Isa, one of the most influential artist in traditional stencil printing. Since 1940 he has created more than three thousand design stencils, that remain to to date in the Isa Research Institute in Japan. Many of his creations are unique, yet modern, and have been printed on numerous products or are available as standalone art.
