This Isa-Monyo Furoshiki is printed and dyed with a special technique that keeps both sides of the pattern same but with two different colors, purple and green, so it can be used on either side, depending on preference. The pattern of flower Chrysanthemum (Kiku) is the emblem of the Japanese royal family, a symbol of longevity, nobility and rejuvenation.

What is Furoshiki?

Furoshiki is a piece of square towel that people from Japan have been using to wrap gifts and carry groceries for generations. Due to its unique pattern, size and weaving style, this 100% high quality cotton towel can be used in a variety of different ways.

About the pattern

The pattern Chrysanthemum (Kiku) is considered the flower of autumn and nobility in Japan. Moreover it is also the symbol of the Japanese Emperor and the Imperial family, and as such appears on the Imperial Seal, Japanese passports and the 50 yen coin. It is also said to represent longevity and rejuvenation.

About the designer

The Isa Monyo collection was originally designed by Kunio Isa, one of the most influential artist in traditional stencil printing. Since 1940 he has created more than three thousand design stencils, that remain to to date in the Isa Research Institute in Japan. Many of his creations are unique, yet modern, and have been printed on numerous products or are available as standalone art.

How can you use the Furoshiki?

The Furoshiki can be used as strong shopping bag using either a two or three knot method (see instructional video to learn how). The bag size and handles can instantly be adjusted to suit your needs. It can also be used as a thin blanket, or can be spread as a picnic or beach towel. The Furoshiki can even be hung on the wall as a decorative piece of art. Wearing Furoshiki as a scarf or a headband has also become popular among young women. It can even be hung on the wall as a beautiful piece of art or used as a tablecloth, the uses are endless!

Maintaining your Furoshiki is easy, simply machine wash 30 degrees Celsius and iron as needed. Furoshiki is not only beautiful, useful and easy to handle, it also stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills. Using the multipurpose and multifunctional Furoshiki can reduce waste from both wrapping and shopping.
