The traditional bamboo whisk or “chasen” is an indispensable tool of the Japanese matcha tea ceremony. The fine, handmade prongs are carved out in a single piece of bamboo by craftsmen whose skills are passed down from generation to generation. When using a chasen to whisk matcha it is best to keep a loose and relaxed wrist and make rapid zigzag motions in the shape of letter “W” or “M” – this helps to give matcha the ideal frothy texture for drinking.
Precise cuts create a flexible whisk, which is in the lower part are slightly bent and at the top gathered together and finished with a special wooden handle.

Tips for frothing matcha
It is best to start whipping the matcha powder slowly after adding the necessary amount of water, gently brushing the chasen matcha whisk on the bottom of the bowl, this allows you to mix the whole matcha with water well. Then move the chasen slighty higher, closer to the surface and continue with more energetic movements resembling the letter “W” or “M” for about 10-20 seconds. It is worth remembering that while mixing, work with your wrist instead of the whole hand, which gets tired faster. A thin foam coat should quickly appear on the surface. Perfect foaming of tea is just possible thanks to the large number of flexible bamboo mustaches. The more mustaches in the chase, the easier it will be to obtain a perfect layer of foam.
For the best effect, the whisk should be soaked in hot water before use and rinsed after use. Chasen shrinks when it dries out and then becomes brittle and susceptible to damage. Storing the chasen on a special stand helps to ensure a longer life and keep it in shape.
