Bamboo spoons are also great for the little ones. The untreated surface is safe for children and doesn’t break easily. Bamboo doesn’t transfer heat and stays cool, which protects the children’s tender lips. Wood is also good for babies to chew on to sooth tooth pain. The spoons do wear out from all the chewing, but it is a calming feeling to know that they are chewing natural wood rather than plastic.
About the surface and how to treat it
The surface of the Live Green Bamboo Spoon Small is intentionally raw and untreated. Almost any wood designed for the use with food is treated with food-grade mineral oil, which is derived from petroleum. This oil is tasteless, odorless and colorless and is considered non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. However, it all depends on how refined the oil is. Furthermore, mineral oil is poorly biodegradable making the unsuitable for composting.
However, treating the surface of wood is still important in order to keep moisture out and avoid molding. Furthermore it helps to preserve the natural oils inside, thus preventing the fibers of the wood from drying out and cracking. Despite its downsides, mineral oil is thus far the most effective and common choice. Luckily there are also some more natural alternatives, about which you can learn more here. Your best choice is beeswax or fractionated coconut oil. Other oils made from vegetables, grains or fruits work too, but over time these can deteriorate and will eventually turn rancid. We therefore do not recommend this treatment.
With proper care your spoon will be looking beautiful for years to come. We recommend to retreat the surface monthly and avoid long exposure to wetness and heat. Hand wash it with soapy warm water and rinse thoroughly.
