About the brand
T’RU is a social responsible initiative born in Switzerland to support the alpaca weaving skills of 700 women in El Alto-La Paz Bolivia. The main mission is to promote a sustainable product made by Bolivian hands, with high quality and competitive for the most demanding markets.
Handmade in Bolivia with traditional techniques
The material for these blankets has been very carefully selected by experienced Bolivian women and weaved or knitted by hand using traditional techniques. Each blanket takes several weeks of careful and detailed handwork.
Raising and keeping alpacas has a long history in Bolivia. The animals live in their natural habitat on the heigh elevations of the Andes and are taken care of by the Bolivian men. Over many generations the alpaca wool and weaving has been perfected to create an incredibly soft and strong fabric. Whole communities are dedicated to the production of the alpaca wool and this work is essential for their survival in the mountains.
Many Bolivian communities export their products through Peru, which is the main hub for alpaca wool trade. The wages are very low, but many have no other choice. The TR'U alpaca wool is directly imported from Bolivia with fair salaries for the communities, a fair price with fair compensation. Therefore, every blanket purchase provides work and supplies for the community.
About Baby Alpaca Wool
Alpaca animals grow free in their natural habitat in the high elevation of Bolivia. They are sheared two times per year, with careful treatment of the animal. The material is gentle and sustainable. Only the finest hair that grows underneath the think fur of the adult animals is called Baby Alpaca Wool. It is not exposed to sunlight, which makes it one of the softest and lightest fiber on the planet. Due to the respect of Alpaca and their life quality, alpaca wool are very limited therefore they are very expensive.
Alpaca Baby Wool has the following advantages:
- naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic
- adapts to the ambient temperature (keeps you warm in the cold, and cool in the warm)
- very soft and gentle on the skin (20-23 microns)
- lightweight, yet durable and strong
- sustainable and biodegradable
How to take care of your Alpaca Blanket
- Expose your blanket to some fresh air outside and mild sunlight
- Wash your blanket only if really necessary — if you do, always hand wash *
Due to the natural risk of wool moths, we strongly recommend that you keep it in a sealed plastic bag with a pouch of lavender, if you are not going to use for while.
How to wash the Alpaca wool blanket
- Hand wash at a maximum of 30C° *
- Use wool detergent or mild shampoo
- Do not rub, the wool could otherwise form pellets
- Pretreat stubborn stains before washing with detergent
- Wash the blankets separately and do not use bleach
- Do not squeeze, just wring it out carefully, dry it flat and reshape the original form
- Do not hang and never dry it in the dryer
* We prefer hand wash but machine washing is possible in a low cycle at 30° with a wool program. Machine wash is at your own risk, as program settings are always different.
