The surface of the Live Green Bamboo Spoon Large is treated with high-quality food-grade mineral oil. Almost any wood designed for the use with food is treated with this type of oil, which is derived from petroleum. This oil is tasteless, odorless and colorless and is considered non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. Mineral oil is thus far the most effective way for protecting wood. Unfortunately mineral oil is poorly biodegradable, therefore we do not recommend to compost this spoon. Treating the surface of wood is important in order to keep moisture out and avoid molding. Furthermore it helps to preserve the natural oils inside, thus preventing the fibers of the wood from drying out and cracking. There are also some more natural alternatives for wood treatment, about which you can learn more here. Your best alternative choice is beeswax or fractionated coconut oil. Other oils made from vegetables, grains or fruits work too, but over time these can deteriorate and eventually turn rancid. We therefore do not recommend this kind of treatment.
