About the print
The picture shows a huge wave threatening three boats off the coast of the city of Kanagawa (now Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture) with Mount Fuji in the background. Although sometimes a tsunami is assumed, the wave is probably just a big rogue wave. As in many of the graphics in the series, it shows the area around Mt Fuji under special conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background. The art was created by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai in the year 1831.
